We lose 25 orangutans every day.

Their forest homes are destroyed to clear the way for palm oil – an ingredient used to make products for brands like Unilever, Mondelez and Nestlé.

These companies must clean up their act to make sure that their products aren’t made at the expense of orangutans’ habitat.

To make way for palm oil plantations, huge areas of rainforest are torn down by bulldozers or burned to the ground. In Indonesia alone, an area the size of a football pitch is lost every 25 seconds.

When these forests are destroyed, local people lose their homes and amazing species like orangutans are put in danger.

Bhutan, the environmental hero kingdom

The Kingdom of Bhutan lies deep in the Himalayas, on the border between China and India. It has a population on roughly 780 thousand people.

What makes Bhutan special is their unique compromise to forever remain carbon neutral. In the country’s Constitution is it mandatory for 60 % of its territory to remain forest covered and although it generates 2.2 million tons of CO2 annually  Bhutan’s forests absorb more than 4 million tons of it.

HUMANITARIAN WORK

At the end of 2017, 68.5 million people were in need of protection and assistance as a consequence of forced displacement, according to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. This is the equivalent of a person becoming displaced every two seconds. Forcibly displaced populations include refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs) and asylum-seekers. Globally in 2017, 40 million people were internally displaced as a result of conflict and persecution, while 25.4 million were refugees and 3.1 million were asylum-seekers. Most refugees nowadays live in urban areas (58%), not in camps or rural areas. Of the global refugee population, 52% are children under 18 – the highest proportion in a decade – including many who are unaccompanied or separated from their families (source: UNHCR Global Trends Report 2017).
